Job Description
The Student Internship position is part of the Pathways Internship Program at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), specifically within the Office of Federal Lands Highway (FLH). This internship provides students with an opportunity to contribute to designing, managing, and overseeing the construction of roads, bridges, and trails in national parks, forests, and other public lands. Interns gain practical experience while working on meaningful projects in various engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities
As a Pathways Student Trainee in Civil Engineering, you may be assigned to one or more of the following branches:
- Construction: Conduct inspections, test materials, participate in meetings, and assist with surveying tasks.
- Highway Design: Assist in preparing roadway plans, performing calculations, and drafting project specifications.
- Materials: Prepare samples for testing, monitor test procedures, and record data for concrete, soils, and other materials.
- Survey: Support survey crew with basic computations and use of equipment for construction survey tasks.
- Planning and Programming: Compile data, assist in damage site assessments, and support project environmental compliance.
- Bridge Design, Management, and Inspection: Help prepare specifications, conduct structural analysis, and use CADD software.
- Hydraulics: Conduct drainage design calculations, develop Storm Water Management Plans, and prepare technical reports.
Qualifications
To qualify, candidates must:
- Be U.S. citizens.
- Be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited engineering program.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Enroll in courses that meet half-time or full-time student status each semester.
Educational Requirements:
- GS-02: High school diploma or GED.
- GS-03: Completion of one academic year post-high school.
- GS-04: Completion of two academic years post-high school or an associate’s degree.
- GS-05: Completion of four academic years leading to a bachelor’s degree.
- GS-07: Graduate-level study or superior academic achievement as defined by OPM.
Experience
Experience in civil engineering or a related field is beneficial, including both paid and unpaid work such as volunteer roles. Relevant experience will be evaluated based on specific knowledge, skills, and abilities in areas such as:
- Oral and Written Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in engineering-related software and databases.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to conduct engineering calculations and analyze project data.
Skills
- Strong problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in engineering design software (e.g., Microstation CADD).
- Ability to work effectively in teams and independently.
- Basic surveying skills and familiarity with testing procedures.
Salary
Salary is based on the federal General Schedule (GS) pay scale and varies by level:
- GS-02 to GS-07, based on academic achievement and level of completed coursework.
