Job Description
The Financial Management Student Trainee position with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) is a summer internship opportunity designed for students enrolled in a qualifying educational program at an accredited institution, either on a full-time or part-time basis. As part of the DFAS Pathways Program, interns will gain paid, hands-on experience in financial management from May through August. Upon meeting the minimum qualifications, applicants will be invited via email to complete an online assessment. Please monitor your “Spam” or “Junk” folders.
Responsibilities
- Engage in the DFAS Internship Program with various assignments applying financial principles and procedures.
- Review and verify the validity and completeness of appropriation, accounting, or financial data, including disbursements and collections.
- Input data into financial systems, correct any errors, and ensure accuracy.
- Balance and reconcile financial documents, automated records, and reports.
- Assist in the creation of both recurring and special financial reports.
Qualifications
- Education: Enrolled or formally accepted in a full-time or half-time accredited degree program or qualifying certificate program.
- Academic Performance: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, which must be maintained throughout the internship.
- Documentation: Submit current transcripts and proof of enrollment.
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Selective Service Registration: Required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Experience
Minimum Requirement: Either:
- Education: Two years of successfully completed education beyond high school, or equivalent combinations of education and experience.
- Generalized Experience: One year of experience in clerical, office, or other work demonstrating the necessary skills.
Volunteer experience, including work through organizations such as Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, can count toward experience.

Salary
This is a paid internship with compensation determined by federal government pay scales and other considerations.
Job Benefits
- Potential for conversion to a permanent or term position at the GS-11 level upon successful completion of the program and academic requirements, subject to DFAS’s needs.
- Telework options may be available based on mission requirements and supervisor’s discretion.
- DFAS-sponsored financial management certification (Level 1) must be achieved within two years of entry.
