Job Description
The Library of Congress internship Work Study Student Program provides high school students with an opportunity to gain valuable career development experience. Combining on-the-job training with classroom education, students earn a federal salary while receiving supervision and career guidance. Participants work part-time during the school year, with potential full-time hours during school breaks, to gain insights into the operations of the world’s largest library.
Responsibilities
As part of the Work Study Student Program, students will have exposure to various areas of library operations, such as:
- Learning about copyright, preservation, reference, access standards, and information management.
- Gaining insight into the environment and culture of a global repository of knowledge.
- Assisting with library tasks and projects under staff supervision.
- Completing assignments that align with the Library of Congress’s mission to serve as a comprehensive resource for the public.
Qualifications
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be enrolled in their junior or senior year of high school at a local institution within 45 minutes of the worksite.
- Be available to work Monday through Friday, either from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. or from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., from August 19, 2024, to June 30, 2025.
- Be at least 16 years old and eligible for a work permit, or be 18 years old.
- Be in good academic standing with their high school.
- Have positive references from previous employers, volunteer supervisors, or school officials.
- Have a recommendation from the high school coordinator or counselor, as outlined in the application instructions.
Experience
- No previous experience is required for the GS-1 level, but applicants should have a consistent school record and demonstrate good behavior in both academic and work environments.
Skills
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to complete tasks and follow instructions under supervision.
- Professionalism and positive behavior in educational and work settings.
